Put Food In The Budget Petition
A real poverty reduction plan for Ontario requires adequate income supports for everyone.
I support the campaign calling on the government to create a hundred dollar monthly Healthy Food Supplement for all adults on social assistance as a first step toward providing adequate incomes.
Despite the evidence that the cost of shelter and nutritious food make it virtually impossible for people on social assistance to lead healthy lives, there is no formula for setting benefit rates in Ontario.
As a result, people on social assistance are being forced to choose between paying rent and buying food, are sending their children to school without breakfast or lunch, and are relying on food banks for survival.
It's time to put food in the budget!

I know that my grocery bill every 2 weeks has increased by - in the last few months. With rent at a premium it does not leave people on OSP much money to purchase healthly foods to help balance their diets the extra $ 100.00 a month would go a long way to help nutritionally

Access to nutritious food is a determinant of health and a human right. It is essential that people on social assistance have that right. Ontario needs a food supplement now! Put it in the budget.

Everyone needs to have the option to eat healthy. I feel that if we all took responsabiltiy and ate appropriatly we would be less of a burdon on the health care system!
Barbara Carr, Hastings County, K0L 1C0
I truly believe that if people had the extra 0.00 each month for a better eating habit, then it would cut down on some of the obesity problems that there are. Once bills and rent are paid it doesn't leave a big amount for food, so the extra would be of great help of those in need.
Mike Clarke, Toronto, M4C 3W2
The Food Supplement, however small, will be cost effective because the money will be spent locally and will cut health care cost when people are actually eating the proper food. The people will also have more energy to participate in society.

social change comes through struggle. more studies, position papers, or letters are unfortunately not going to accomplish what we all know needs to happen. maybe one day those of us in the 'poverty industry' will find the determination and courage to create a situation where the status quo is untenable. it is our only choice if we truly understand the suffering of those we claim to serve.

Likewise, I speak from the position of coordinator of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie Justice Office. We too are concerned about the number of people who struggle daily just to get food, much less healthy food, on the table. No one should be without enough healthy food daily.

Can we not eliminate the "frills" in our Provincial Budget and ensure poor families have the opportunity to feed their children. So many people think this is just a handout to be abused. Its healthy food and healthy living we are asking for not a handout. A handout is what GM and Chrysler are asking for. They should try to live one week in poverty. It's time to smarten those people up now.

Increase in disease both mentally and physically will be seen if poverty reduction issues are not addressed. Increase in health care expenses will be seen as a consequence of not addressing poverty. Quality of life issues will just escalate. Now is the time to do somethilng and give a chance for people to increase their quality of life and dignity. Think of all the children who are affected by poor living conditions and empty stomachs. Have a heart and address this issue which affects all of us.

I feel like a should be able to afford to eat half way descent,
if not at least healthy.
I never asked to get sick,
but did.
O.D.S.P. has granted me money for special diet in the total of .00 a month.
Good thing I don't expect to eat fresh fruit, vegetables or drink milk.
I started working full time at the age of 15.
Than I got sick when I was 39.
With the limited monies I receive from O.D.S.P.,
it's hard to decide to rather pay the heat, hydro, rent or eat for the month.
Would be nice if those that we voted in would let us live above poverty.
OR eat better than most live stock.

this is of tantamount impotance for those who are on ODSP. People must recognize the difference between ODSP and OW. OW is a temporary income for those who can work while ODSP is a benefit paid to the chronically disabled who have proven that they cannot work consistently or AT ALL in most cases due to a serious illness or disablity. Imagine how many tax dollars would be saved by ensuring our poor and disabled citizens had appropriate food. That would mean far less health care costs bothnow and in the future. In hard economic times this is one expense that would pay for itself in reduced health care costs .

It is a struggle enough to live up north, with high heating bills, warmer clothes needed, and higher costs of fresh produce. For people on assistance (and I was one, briefly 5 years ago) vegetables, fruit, meat and dairy products become a luxury. We know that poor diet leads to poor health and that down the road medical expenditures for heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer and other diet linked illnesses will far exceed the 0.oo healthy food allowance budget. Why do governments always try to balance their budgets on the backs of the poor? Why are we bailing out multinational corporations while children in my son's class only have fruit for one week a month? Its time to be proactive and wellness oriented rather than having our health budget in crisis mode because of chronic illnesses.

This is a matter of urgent concern - which also seems to me to have the potential to stimulate the economy - I certainly hope you include ODSP recipients in this move - my mother who has chronic mental illness and diabetes as a result of her medications has a hard time eating properly on the budget - and I know how much higher it is that the regular social assistance. It is also time to have a minimum wage that compliments a guaranteed annual income begining at the poverty level (#20,000), integrated with regular public home-services such as used to be provided the VON and Public Health Nurses/Officials. The disgraceful, regressive "Health Tax" that dings the disposable income of those at ,000 @ 6%; whereas, those at ,000 and ,000 @ 1.5%; those at 0,000 @ 1%; those at 1,000 @ 0.5%; those at 0,000 @ 1/3 of 1%;and those with 1,000,000 in disposable income, pay less than 1/10th of 1% as a "Health Tax", is totally unacceptable and has to given a fair structure. In a province that prides itself as having a "progressive" taxation system, wherein those with the greatest means to pay would be charged the highest tax rates; now, shamefully, with this despicable "Health Tax", those with the greatest means to pay are charged the least! A basket of healthy food is deserved, it will permit those on social assistance to buy things like fresh fruit and vegetables instead of having to buy things that are processed and unhealthy. The amount spent on this initiative would undoubtedly be a later saving by the health care system.
In addition, it would permit Ontario Works recipients to use some of the basic needs allowance to contract for telephone services which would enable employers to contact social assistance recipients who apply for employment. When someone is seeking employment, in most cases, an employer would contact the applicant by telephone... if one does not have a telephone, how encouraging is it for an employer to interview that employer.

I our government treats the poor like a disgrace to our country by starving them. They take away approx. 23 percent in 1995 and what roughly 3 years of 2 percent increases, take away the special diet, rents are so high, we are starving to keep roof over our heads. We need a 40 percent increase and a yearly increase, plus the special diet. Our government does nothing to help the single poor in this country, let alone any other poor people. It is essential to support the most vuneragle in our society, for their sake and for the fact that such support will have the greatest impact in stimulating the economy.
I work with the London Hunger Relief Action Coalition and know the need of many in our community, a need that is increasing and may not able to be met by the many dedicated volunteers and supports of meal programs and food banks.
I am also a Registered Dietitian and know the importance of good food in maintaining health and thus reducing health care costs.

It's ridiculous to expect people to get off of Welfare when their health worsens because of poor health due to not enough food. There are not even enough jobs for everyone to earn their keep. Make this temporary time in someone's life a boost to get back on their feet again, not a hindrance and landing in a rut. ALSO, although ALL persons who are on Social Assistance NEED the 0.00 healthy food supplement as a start, there is a huge difference between persons on Welfare and persons who have a disability and entitled to ODSP. ODSP should not be considered a 'benefit' it should be a basic right for a disabled person. We ALL pay taxes when we shop, making us ALL taxpayers. Please don't forget that. It is imperative to INCREASE ALL of the ODSP RATES to a minimum of 1,500.00 to allow more independence in meeting each individual's personal needs. There's no possible way that the ministry can create a comprehensive guideline to cover everything required for a person with a disability. I have NO Family who help me and it's not up to my friends to give me gifts, especially when I can't afford to buy gifts for them or their children.

The current Ontario Works System is a financial disgrace..In no way does it adequately support individuals or families to live in my community compared to the cost of living..This results in the further involvement of other social agencies to meet their needs. Often times i have lots of kids here to "chill" with my son and they often come with hungry tummies. The supplument would often help in making it easier to have these kids come and enjoy their visit leaving feeling like someone besides their parents cared enough to provide an extra snack or two. I m currently receiving odsp and work part time at a grocery store but the economic strain of feeding more than one child and being only covered for one child and one adult is a large one. I think it is essential to help build the bridge between social interaction and food that is often neglected for kids because parents on assistance can't afford it.

Healthy food is a right. By allowing individuals more money to be spent on nutritious foods, the savings realised in future healthcare costs would be significant. No one in this province should have to choose between food and shelter, yet the current system forces such a choice on a frequent basis. I am a single person that lives on odsp. I find it very difficult to live from month to month on 9.00, which includes a whole .00 for a special diet allowance that is supposed to help me supplement healthier foods such as fresh veggies and low fat foods and sugar free stuff because of certain conditions I have, like high blood pressure, colitis, Diabetes, obesity!! The fact of the matter and it's proven through all kinds of health networks, I wouldn't be this way if I could eat 3 healthy meals a day which is what I haven't been able to do since I've been on ODSP.I wasn't even aware of the "special diet allowance until someone else, who was also on ODSP, told me that it existed 3 yrs ago. I've been on ODSP since 1988. It kind of makes me laugh as the truth of the matter is the costs of living is soaring out of control. We haven't had a decent raise since 1991 and since then rents have almost trippled in price. I thank God I live in a subsidized apartment. Otherwise I'd be on the streets because what ODSP give for shelter costs, I wouldn't even be able to afford a room in some sleezy hotel. Food costs are ridiculous A bloody loaf of bread is almost .00 a loaf, a bag of milk almost .00, a 10 lb bag of potatoes is .00 and get this, I paid almost .00 for a red pepper. This is just a couple of the expenses people have to live on. I went shopping last month and never bought meat or fresh veggies because of the costs. My grocery bill was a whopping 150.00 which was maybe enough food for a single person to live on for maybe 2 weeks. I don't understand what the government is thinking. I'd just love to see them (the government), for once, try and live on what we do for a few months. I'm a very frustrated woman and I'm afraid if things don't change soon, I'm gonna be a dead one as I can't control my diabetes or other ailments with what I have to live on today.

there is a greater cost to the health system when you have generations of people living on low incomes and there is not enough affordable housing. on top of that people are also dealing with the stress of poverty which can make anyone sick.

As a Health Promotor for Heart and Stroke, Ibelieve that adequate money is needed to allow families to feed themselves in a healthy way. With the obesity epidemic in children upon us we need to feed our children in a healthy way according to the Canada Food Guide. If this is what we want to do and governments endorse this action then they must provide funding for our most vulnerable so they can eat healthy. Put food in the budget.
